- Goals:
- educate students in the organization, location, retrieval, selection, and evaluation of information in all its diversified formats
- encourage in students a sense of curiosity
- develop the ability to explore a wide range of information for academic purposes
- Objectives:
- Level 1:
- locate Miller Library's web site
- identify the type and usefulness of the information and resources
- search the on-line catalog by author, title, and subject
- search on-line databases using a simple keyword search
- locate and retrieve periodical articles on-line
- Level 2:
- access resources in Miller Library, on the internet, and other institutions using the enhanced features of the on-line catalog
- locate and retrieve information and resources using keyword, subject, or Boolean searches
- identify and use different types of search engines to access information of the internet
- identify different types of web pages
- evaluate and select appropriate web sites/pages
- evaluate and select appropriate electronic or print resources and information
- Level 3:
- identify the information need
- design a research strategy
- select, retrieve, and evaluate principal resources in the student's field of study
- interpret, synthesize, and use the information gathered to complete the given assignment
- document references using standardized bibliographic styles
- Strategies:
- provide library/research instruction to every first year student through the CNW program
- provide advanced research instruction to upper level classes as requested by individual faculty
- provide guidance in the use of discipline-specific resources on an individual or group basis
- provide informal instruction at point-of-need
- work closely with faculty in designing library assignments
- make available guide sheets, bibliographies, and pathfinders in the library and on the library's web site
- establish appropriate links on the library's web site to selective databases and web sites
